First American-born Pope of the Catholic Church. He was elected pontiff in May 2025, after the death of Pope Francis. In his first homily as leader, he lamented that people value “technology, money, success, power, or pleasure” over Christianity. 

Before Fame

He graduated from Villanova University.  By the year 1985, he joined the Augustinian mission in Peru. 

Trivia

Between 1987 and 1988, he returned to the United States and served as pastor for the Augustinian Province of Chicago. In February 2023, Pope Francis made him a cardinal-bishop. When he lived in Chicago, he was a Chicago White Sox fan and was seen at a White Sox game during the 2025 World Series. 

Family Life

His real name is Robert Prevost. His father worked as the superintendent of Chicago schools. His mother was a librarian. His brother was interviewed by a local Chicago news station on the day it was announced that he had become the new pope.

In 2017, he shared an article calling the Donald Trump administration’s ban on some refugees “a dark hour of US history.”  Donald Trump later congratulated him in 2025 on becoming the first-ever American pope.
